Boreal Framework

The Boreal Forest Conservation Framework is a groundbreaking vision that promotes equal treatment of conservation and development across Canada's Boreal region. The Framework calls for:

protecting at least 50% of the region in a network of large interconnected protected areas, and

supporting sustainable communities, world-leading ecosystem-based resource management practices, and state-of-the-art stewardship practices in the remaining landscape.

The Framework was developed by the Boreal Leadership Council (BLC), a partnership of leading conservation organizations, resource companies, and First Nations. Members of the BLC, convened by the Canadian Boreal Initiative, recognize that all who depend on the forest must come together to plan for its future. They have joined together in a revolutionary collaboration to promote the conservation and sustainable use of Canada's Boreal region.

More and more companies want the Boreal to be a place with a truly sustainable future: ecologically, culturally and economically.

Canadian Boreal Initiative

Canadian Boreal InitiativeThe Canadian Boreal Initiative (CBI) works with a wide range of conservation organizations, First Nations, industry and other interested parties to link science, policy and conservation activities in Canada's boreal forest. CBI's long term vision is to safeguard the balance of nature for all time in Canada's Boreal Forest through establishing an interconnected network of large-scale protected areas and conservation lands, applying state-of-the-art sustainable development practices on the remainder of the landscape, and engaging and empowering local communities and First Nations on land management decisions.
