Background Information

-The Nahanni National Park Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site protect the South Nahanni watershed--encompassing some of Canada’s most spectacular Boreal lands and significant cultural sites for Aboriginal peoples.

-The Nahanni National Park Reserve became the first site in the world to be officially granted World Heritage status by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

-The watershed is of cultural and spiritual importance to Aboriginal peoples, who have expressed a strong desire to protect the entire watershed of the South Nahanni River to protect the land and its people for all time.

-The South Nahanni Watershed falls within the traditional territory of the Dene people. Dehcho First Nations are involved in negotiations with the Governments of Canada and the Northwest Territories concerning the southern 80 percent of the watershed, while the upper 20 percent is located within the settlement area of the Sahtu Dene and Metis. Parks Canada is also involved in consultations with Kaska Dena communities in the Yukon.

-Canada’s North is under increasing pressure to develop its rich energy and mineral resources. Conservation planning in advance of development is urgently required to protect important natural and cultural values.
